Stick welding, or formally, shield metal arc welding (SMAW), is considered one of the most used forms of welding in the world. In many countries, more than half of the welding occurs by using the stick welding in this form. What makes this welding technique so popular? The versatility of the weld with its simplicity makes its use in constructing steel structures a preferred method. Though the recent use of flux-cored and gas metal arc welding techniques have come of age, the low cost of the equipment and easy application guarantees that stick welding will remain popular for a very long time. Smaller businesses and amateurs doing private work particularly use the stick weldingtechnique simply because other forms are more expensive.

Stick welding is used to weld many types of materials, including alloy, carbon and stainless steels. Stick welding is also used on cast and ductile irons. Nickel and copper and even aluminum can be welded, even in light of their nonferrous matter. There is no upper bound, but the lower bound is based on the welder and his skill and preference. There is very few times that the bound goes below .05 inches. Unlimited thickness can be joined through joint preparation and multiple passes. Because of the skill of the welder and the electrodes he uses, stick welding is used in all positions.

Even for the expert, however, many types of cracksare a common occurrence, so special caution must always be taken to prevent this from occurring. Cracks are dangerous and can result in an unexpected weld break at any time. High carbon as well as high alloy content is a typical cause of cracks, but a content of high sulfur through the base metal can also create cracking. Below are easy stick welding tips to help prevent cracking:

Weld ensuring that hydrogen electrodes are low.

Preheats need to be high for heavy plate or rigid joints.

Small electrodes along with low currents reduce any potential for penetration because the amount of alloy from the base metal is reduced.

Before breaking any arc, fill all craters found.

When welding multiple passes and fillets, make sure the first bead is the right size and flat or has a convex shape. This will help to resist cracking before the later support beads are added. Increase bead size by using slower travel speeds as well as a short arc. You can also weld at an angle of 5 degrees going up. Weld while the plate is hot.

All unyielding parts have the potential to crack. Whenever you can, weld towards the unrestrained end. Make sure to leave a gap of 1/32 inches between each plate so that free shrinkage is possible as the weld cools down. Finally, peen individual beads while they are hot to release any stresses.

Learning how to stick weld begins with these basic crack prevention tips and will help to create a weld that is high quality, even for a novice.

Tungsten Inert Gas or TIG welding refers to the welding technique where a tungsten electrode heats the metal you are looking to weld. Gas plays a role because it protects the weld puddle from possible airborne contaminants which may affect the quality of the weld. The most commonly used gas for TIG welding is Argon. TIG welders who are proficient at their jobs will be able to produce clean, precise welds on any metal. The following are things about TIG welding that TIG welders would be familiar with.

These may also be considered TIG welding tips for beginners:

It uses non-consumable tungsten.

Filler metal is added by hand whenever the process requires it

The shielding gas is the one that protects both the weld and tungsten. This shielding gas is Argon, because of Argon’s ability to be used in welding many types of metals and thicknesses.

It is able to weld more kinds of metals and alloys than any other welding process. TIG welders are able to weld steel, stainless steel, chromoly, aluminum, nickel alloys, magnesium, copper, brass, bronze and even a soft metal like gold. Some of the products of TIG welding includes wagons, bike frames, lawn mowers, door handles, fenders, etc.

Below are important TIG welding tips that anyone can benefit from, whether it be beginners who are new to welding or to TIG welding, or experienced TIG welders:

The TIG welding process, when summarized, is as follows: first you establish an arc, create a weld puddle, add the filler metal “dip” into the puddle you created while at the same time pushing the weld puddle you created along the weld joint. Finally, you will end the arc then leave the torch over the weld puddle you have created until the puddle cools.

To prepare your weld joint, first you will need to clean both the area for weld joint. The filler metal also plays an important role in the preparation. Make sure that all oil, grease, dirt, paint and other contaminants are all removed from the area. Otherwise, even a slight presence of these compounds can result in arc instability or contaminated welds.

It is important for TIG welders to know how to TIG weld so they can accomplish their tasks more efficiently.

What is Welding?

Welding might not be known by many people but the truth is it is becoming a needed profession by many. Welding can easily be defined as the process of joining materials by means of melting parts and using a filler to cast a joint.

Different Types of Welding

Welding can be done by using different types of techniques that uses many types of energy sources like flame, gas, electric arc, laser and even ultrasound to complete the task. The lack of welders in the industry has become a dilemma since most industries require professional welders to get the job done. Most of the time people consider welding as a low paying job but little do they now that professional welders earn thrice as much as those professions working inside an office.

Starting a Welding Career?

If you’re planning on starting a welding career then you’ve made the right decision. So how much does it cost for welding training? Welding training cost varies depending on the type of welding course you wish to take. Welding is a booming industry and there is the lack of welders in the industry today promising high pay rates than normal. Most welders can earn about $30,000 – $40,000 per year more than enough than any other profession.

Welding Programs

Welding courses vary from arc welding, gas welding, resistance welding and energy beam welding just to name a few. Each welding course have basics to follow you start by reading blueprints and calculating your materials to make each job possible. Welding students will have hands-on training that will pit their wits to the test and also to make them successfully skillful welders in the near future.

Choosing the Right Welding School

If you’re interested on having a welding career then you’ll have to pay the price and make some financial decisions to leap you forward. Welding training fees vary from each school or college since it depends on the type of facilities and training materials that they offer. Welding courses are offered by modules or in programs depending on what type of program you enroll you’ll get sufficient knowledge to do profession welding in the near future. To become a welding student all you need is a high school diploma or equivalent and you’re good to go.

Welding has become a popular choice of profession nowadays that most often many colleges are now offering classes. Check your local neighborhood, you might find a college near you that offer short term welding courses. As a general advice, find a school that offers welding classes that caters to many welding modules. The more modules a welding program offers the more learning you can have.
